Glenorchy Transformer Station

Serving residents in north Oakville, Glenorchy Transformer Station supplies up to 153 MW of energy to local electricity consumers and has supported the rapid residential growth in the area. IBI provided complete design and construction support services for the transformer station in one of the fastest construction projects of its type in the province.

The Glenorchy Transformer Station connects directly to the Hydro One transmission line, transforming power from the transmission level to the distribution level for supply throughout Oakville. Providing complete professional services, IBI’s scope of services included an environmental assessment, complete architectural and engineering design and construction support services.  This included i architectural, electrical, systems, civil, structural, mechanical, electrical grounding, lightning protection, electrical protection and control, and cost analysis and estimation.

Given the schedule challenges, separate packages were developed for the pre-purchase of major equipment and components such as GIS switchgear and power transformers. This helped in achieving critical milestones.

IBI assistanced Oakville Hydro during the tendering phase, as well as providing construction support during the construction phase. The work included system impact assessments for submission to IESO and a connection impact assessment for submission to Hydro One.

Construction of the transformer station began in August 2010, with the station being energized and brought into service by July 2011, meeting a very aggressive and ambitious deadline. IBI was proud to have helped Oakville Hydro complete the Glenorchy Transformer Station on schedule and within budget to the satisfaction of local councillors and municipalities.
